If you’re planning a trip to China then a visit to one of the countries largest cities, Shanghai, should be near the top of your list. Here are some of the highlights you should make a point of visiting.
The Bund: Shanghai’s most famous street, the Bund offer’s jaw-dropping views of Pudong Skyline, especially at night. The promenade is full of hawkers, young lovers and tourists alike. Meandering along the Bund is a great way to spend an evening. Ferries and river cruises are in abundance too, so if you’ve still got your sea-legs get onboard. To get here, go to East Nanjing Road station on Line 2, which is around a 5 minute walk west of the Bund.
Nanjing Road: One of the world’s biggest shopping streets, Nanjing Road is a commercial Mecca. Leave your credit cards behind or prepare for bankruptcy – people watching, however, is free and could entertain you all day in this manic place. The Metro Line 2 runs under most of Nanjing road so disembark anywhere along there to access.
Yuyuan Garden & Bazaar: A Chinese-Ming style private garden with some gorgeous pavilions, bridges and sculpted gardens dotted all over. Once youíre all ëgardened-outí thereís a buzzing Bazaar waiting to re-energise you upon your exit. Public transport, once again, is a dream – Line 10 – Yuyuan station, easy as you like.
Oriental Pearl TV Tower: Almost 500 metres tall and offering great views of the impressive Shanghai skyline, this iconic building offers 360 degree views and has a decent restaurant to boot. Get to The Bund and take a ferry across, then just follow the huge spiked building until you get there!
The Shanghai Museum (People’s Square): Free admission, limited to 5000 people per day this museum holds artifacts from all over China. 120,000 pieces, 10 exhibition halls and 4 floors – that says a lot more than anything I can put into words. Allocate at least half a day for this. Accessible by Lines 1,2 and 8 – get out at People’s Square Station.
Ok folks, so if China is on your bucket list then get going. It’s still relatively cheap and it really has something for everyone’s taste. Access between China’s cities couldn’t be easier – sleeper trains, discounted flights and cheap buses will ensure you don’t miss out on anything. Happy travels!
